Desalination now supplies the majority of municipal drinking water across the Gulf, and the operating question has shifted from whether it is viable to what it costs to run.

Where the energy goes

Reverse osmosis dominates new capacity, and within an RO plant the high-pressure pumps account for most of the electrical load. Energy recovery devices return a large share of that to the feed stream, which is why their condition monitoring matters more than their datasheet efficiency.

Pretreatment decides the cleaning interval

Membrane life is set long before the membranes. Intake design, biological loading and the pretreatment train together determine how often a plant is offline for cleaning-in-place, and that interval is the single largest lever on availability.
